The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck is the buzz business book for 2017. I was sucked in because so many people I respect have raved about it. That sounds more negative than the book deserves.

I hesitated about writing this review. I’ve written about The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck over on Mass Consternation. Yeah, I don’t usually cross-over the books, but this isn’t a business book. Despite my confusion. So, I’m going to write about what this book is.

This is a self-help book, plain and simple. It covers all the usual topics: learning to say no, you’re one of many, hard work gets results, suffering makes you stronger. Oh, and the one that forms the premise of the book: be picky about what you care about.

Second myth buster: Reading The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck won’t solve all your problems. But that’s just self-help books in general.

For all that, this book isn’t wasted. The praise is justified for some people, but not all. This book would have been amazing when I was younger before I learned the same things through messing up. This book would have saved me a lot of tears and time. Even the shock-factor cursing would have appealed then.

So while I’m first to say this book isn’t for everyone, there’s definitely an audience who needs to read The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck.
