Since setting up this blog about a month ago I have been deliberating over what should be the first post. I don’t want this to be the standard blogs of whining about all that is wrong in the world. Those who know me would think someone had stolen my password anyway, because that is just not me.
So, what is me? I am 32 years old and live in Melbourne, Australia. I LOVE Melbourne. It has the best mix of everything and one of the most accepting cultures in the world, but more of that another time. I work full-time in a range of admin roles, while slowly setting up my own events co-ordination business. At the moment I am temping for an American investment banker looking out the window at the most amazing aerial view of Melbourne (but again, more of that another time). Yep, I also tend to get off-topic heaps. OK, back to … me. This year I am starting a new course: Grad Dip in Public Relations at RMIT. Luckily it is only part-time, or I am likely to try and work full-time and study full-time like I did for my undergrad. I don’t recommend it, but that is just what I do. One of the reasons I don’t want to over-load myself is that I have the most awesome best friends and hanging with them is much more fun than slaving over text books on a Friday night. I adore Kiera and Courtney – they are the best mix of confidant, encouragers and trouble. And we are each so unique. Kiera is a nurse who loves the excitement of having to put tubes in people’s chests to save their lives, Courtney plays in theatre (not the medical kind, that was Kiera) while studying to become a primary teacher. I am proud to be able to share fish bowl sized margaritas with them.
So when not drinking with the girls I am always the one with a camera on hand. Currently, I have an old Fuji s5500 (I did say old), while saving for a Canon 400D digital SLR. My Flickr account has nearly 3,000 photos on it and they are only the ones good enough to make it online. I’d put a link here to my Flickr page, but I am on a work computer that deems it, but not blogspot (WTF?) a personal site and has blocked it. Search the user PrincessTinkerB anyway and you’ll find them. The same username can find my videos on youtube. My video camera is an entry level Canon MD120. It does what it needs to, my main love is still over video. As a last resort I use my phone (a Nokia N95) for photography as well. It takes brilliant photos for a phone, and I love that they can be directly uploaded to Flickr.
At this point everyone will be asking where is the Harry Potter mention. Well, hey, while it seems like it, it is not all my life. Yes, Dymocks’ PR team calls me Australia’s Biggest Harry Potter Fan. I head up Australia’s only event organisation focussing on Harry Potter – HP Events Australia. We have done some fun stuff over the last 12-months: trivia nights, IMAX movie events, Zoo Days and the two biggies, working with Dymocks Melbourne for the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows book release party and managing the MuggleCast Down Under live podcasts. Before you tag me a kidult, can you name any other book released in the last 10 years which has touched as many people of all ages, cultures and nationalities as much as the HP series has? No, you can’t. So, the Harry Potter fan summary is that I am totally a Ravenclaw (as if working and studying full-time, concurrently didn’t say that), yes I randomly wear robes through the city, yes I have read each book many times (favourite is Deathly Hallows followed by Half Blood Prince), yes I have watched the last two movies several times in the cinema and both at least once in IMAX), and yes I do get the giggles seeing unintentional references to the series in everyday life. And the most important, I have met the most amazing people through the fandom and developed friendships that expand past an enjoyment of the books.
Really, so that is me. OK, there is more like loving movies and music etc, but you can head over to Facebook for that stuff.
